Innov-X Systems Announces Agreement with OmniSource to Build Automated XRF Copper Extraction System
Press release from: Innov-X Systems
PR Agency: Armada Group
(openPR) - Woburn, MA, --- Innov-X announced it has received an order from OmniSource Corporation to co-develop and deliver a fully-automated, high-volume copper extraction system. The breakthrough system is the first in the world to automatically remove free and commingled copper (commonly known as “meatballs”) from ferrous shred. Automated copper picking will be far more effective than manual picking. The throughput capacity of the system will be up to 150 tons per hour.
The QXR-CE (Copper Extractor) system uses proven X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology which has successfully been applied to other sorting and separating needs within the recycling industry – non-ferrous metals, glass, engineered plastics, and contaminated wood. XRF technology positively identifies and then sorts mixed metal scrap into specific categories based on highly specific material chemistry. This high level of accuracy improves recoveries and increases asset value for metal recyclers.
The QXR-CE system is designed to maximize cost-effectiveness with a fast return on investment (ROI), driven by three factors:
-Produce lower copper shred (higher value ferrous shred), typically < 17 points
-Reduction of manual pickers
-Extract more of the higher value copper (pickings)
“Through necessity, comes invention. OmniSource chose to work with Innov-X, an industry leader in XRF technology, to develop a copper sorter to meet our customer’ need for low copper shred.” noted John Marynowski, executive vice president – Ferrous Group.

About OmniSource:
One of the largest processors and brokers of scrap metal in North America, OmniSource generates annual sales revenue of $2.5 billion, from 6 million tons of ferrous scrap and 900 million pounds of non-ferrous metals. OmniSource employs more than 2000 people in 42 facilities located in 7 states and Canada.
About Innov-X Systems
Innov-X Systems is a vital force in the x-ray fluorescence (XRF) industry. Their systems perform fast, accurate chemical analysis in seconds to identify, differentiate and quantify most materials by elemental composition. Founded in 2001, they pioneered handheld XRF instrumentation using a miniature x-ray tube rather than radioactive isotopes. Innov-X has rapidly expanded into many other XRF areas. These include the new SEA-Mate™ System for marine on-board fluids analysis; MobiLab X-50, a portable XRF that in comparison to handheld units, delivers higher power and superior performance throughout the periodic table. Innov-X has also taken a leading position in custom XRF and online/automated XRF instrumentation.
With R&D and manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Innov-X has offices in Europe (the Netherlands), and Asia (Hong Kong). They maintain sales and service alliances in Canada, the Middle East, Latin America and worldwide. Service, installation and training is available in over 100 countries.
