Dirk Hellhammer receives Lifetime Achievement Award in New York

On September 11, 2012 Dirk Hellhammer, PhD, Professor at Trier University and member of the DAaCRO’s Scientific Advisory Board receives the “Lifetime Achievement Award” of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology (ISPNE) in New York, USA. For the second time, an European scientists is being honored by receiving this award. At the same time Dirk Hellhammer received a honorary membership of this society.

Professor Hellhammer studied at the University of Wuerzburg and began his scientific career at the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt. This was followed by his postdoc at the University of Muenster, an internship in the USA, and 1987 he was offered a chair from Trier University. His research group introduced several new methods to stress research, among others the assessment of hormones in saliva, the "Cortisol Awakening Reaction", the "Trier Social Stress Test" and the intranasal application of oxytocine to investigate human attachment behavior. With his research he was one of the pioneers of hypocortisolemic health disorders and developed "Neuropattern", the first translational diagnostic tool in stress medicine. Since 2006, he is a member of DAaCRO’s Scientific Advisory Board, teaches at the University of Trier and acts at the Stresscenter Trier as a clinician and scientist.

Earlier, Professor Hellhammer received many other scientific and public awards and honorary memberships, among others at the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research (USA), the Society for Behavioral Medicine (USA), and the American College for Neuropsychopharmacology (USA). His publications are acknowledged by being among the most cited in the field of stress research and psychoneuroendokrinology.
