Univention Corporate Server 3.0-2 launched
Press release from: Univention GmbH
With Univention Corporate Server (UCS) 3.0-2 Univention has now published the second maintenance release for UCS 3. UCS 3.0-2 contains more than 330 bug fixes and improvements, especially with respect to the web interface, the Active Directory domain controller functions provided with Samba 4 and deployment as a physical or cloud-based appliance. UCS 3.0-2 also includes the previously released errata updates and the updates included in Debian 6.0.5. The innovations include official support for Ubuntu clients and the integration of external DHCP servers with the management system.
Bremen, Germany, 19th July 2012
With Version 3.0-2, the second maintenance release for Univention Corporate Server (UCS), in addition to numerous bug fixes and fine-tuning in the areas of integrated Samba 4-based Active Directory domain controllers and the graphic user interface in particular, the Bremen-based Linux company Univention is also introducing a number of important innovations. These predominantly concern the setup in appliance mode and the official support of Ubuntu as a client system.
The setup of UCS-based appliances, which are being operated on clouds ever more commonly according to Univention, has been facilitated considerably: Users can now set up UCS appliances completely browser-based with the help of a wizard. Direct interaction with the system, for example via SSH, is now superfluous. In addition, appliance manufacturers can now simply select from the dialogues appearing during setup. This reduces the time required for the setup significantly. Finally, 3.0-2 can also be used to adopt network settings assigned by an external DHCP server in the management system automatically, which considerably simplifies the setup in virtualization and cloud environments without a virtual, private network.
UCS 3.0-2 is supplied with a new DVD ISO image including all the updates for UCS 3.0 already released and all the package updates for Debian 6.0.5. The use of the new image is highly recommended for new installations as it shortens the installation period significantly. The images available directly from Amazon and Univention for prefabricated virtual machines have also been updated.
As announced, the Bremen team is now offering the possibility to use UCS 3.0-2 to mount Linux desktop systems realised with Ubuntu in a UCS domain. Univention has also provided a detailed description in its Wiki at: wiki.univention.de/?title=Ubuntu and is expanding the standard support with the functions and methods described there.
Many of the improvement requests implemented by Univention in the Bug Tracking System with UCS 3.0-2 concern Samba 4 and the integration of the Active Directory domain controllers realised with it. According to Univention, this component has generated considerable interest since the first release of UCS 3.0 was published around six months ago and proven its worth in productive operation. However, comprehensive feedback has also uncovered a number of improvement requests, of which many have now been fulfilled.

About Univention
Univention is a leading European provider of Open Source products for the cost-efficient operation and effective administration of IT infrastructures. At the heart of our offer is the Linux infrastructure solution Univention Corporate Server (UCS). UCS is a modern enterprise Linux distribution with an integrated Open Source solution for identity and infrastructure management, which makes efficient, centrally controlled administration possible even in challenging environments. The core product UCS is complemented with, among other things, products building on it for the cross-platform administration of thin clients, support of Linux desktops and an integrated server and desktop virtualisation solution. Thanks to the supplied connectors, the products are ideal for use with for example the Microsoft Active Directory, integrate perfectly in existing infrastructures and allow simple migration. A large number of software producers offer optimised packages for operation with UCS, which can be integrated in the UCS management system among other things. UCS is thus the Open Source integration platform for IT infrastructure operation and management.
