Cancer has badly affected the whole of Punjab and shows a 30 per cent annual increase in the number of cancer patients. This has become a cause of worry for the health authorities and common people of Punjab. The last six months alone have seen registration of more than 4000 new Cancer patients in Punjab. The Malwa belt has seen a horrendous impact by producing the most Cancer patients who travel to Bikaner on the infamous ‘Cancer Train’.

The time has come for all of us to sit up and look for preventing the spread of Cancer in Punjab. Rampant use of pesticides, fertilisers, arsenic poisoning and uranium poisoning have been shown to be the major contributors for the spread of this dreaded disease. Scientists and Doctors have also been looking at changing the dietary lifestyle of people to enable them to fight and prevent cancer. But, two recent research studies have come up with the heart-warming conclusion that Canola Oil can fight and retard Colon Cancer and Breast Cancer.

The first study in 2011 conducted by a South Dakota State University scientist shows Canola Oil Protects Against Colon(vadiaant) Cancer and retards the average no. of tumours by 58% in rats and reduces the size of tumours by 90%. The research suggests using canola oil in household cooking may protectagainst colon cancer development.Distinguished professor Dr. Chandradhar Dwivedi, head of SDSU’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, led the study. He and his colleagues published their journal article on the topic, “Chemopreventive Effects of Dietary Canola Oil on Colon Cancer Development,” in the February 2011 issue of the journal Nutrition and Cancer.

“This is the first time anyone has done work on the effect of canola oil in animals on colon cancer prevention. Canola oil was able to reduce the incidence of colon cancer in animals almost to one-third,” Dwivedi said.

Colon cancer causes more deaths than any other form of cancer in men “The advantage of canola is it can be used for day to day cooking, fryingand anything else, in contrast to other oils,” Dwivedi said. “

If people start using canola oil, replacing other oils with canola oil, it gives them the advantage of including Omega-3s in their diet.”Dwivedi adds that studies have indicated that if consumers use canolaas household cooking oil, it could push their ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids to about 3 to 1.

The second study conducted in 2011 by Dr Chung Park &researchers in North Dakota State University shows that Canola Oil May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer. This research was published in the September issue of the journal LIPIDS.
In the in vitro trial, T47D and MCF-7 cancer cells were cultured and then treated with canola oil and two common anti-cancer drugs: tamoxifen and cerulenin. Measures used were cancer cell growth and activity of caspase-3 and p53 (proteins believed to promote cancer cell death and commonly used for assessing breast cancer treatment).
Cancer cells treated with canola oil showed less cell growth and increased activity of the two proteins, leaving researchers to conclude that canola oil and the drugs showed 'synergistic'effects in inhibiting cancer cell growth.
'The results suggest that canola oil may have inhibitory effects on breast cancer cell growth, and warrants further investigation of synergistic effects of canola oil with anti-cancer drugs,' wrote the study’s author Dr Chung Park.
