VITRONIC Auto-ID systems increase the package sorting capacity of UPS at Cologne/Bonn Airport

Wiesbaden / Cologne-Bonn, 24th May 2012 – The machine vision experts VITRONIC are glad to announce a large order from UPS. At Cologne/Bonn Airport, 200 VICAMssi2 high-performance line scan cameras will capture parcels and envelopes for efficient sortation.

The background to this large order is the planned increase of the sortation capacity at this UPS site from 110.000 to 190.000 packages per hour – as part of the largest facility investment outside the United States in the company’s history.

The 200 VITRONIC VICAMssi2 line scan cameras with white LED illumination will be installed as identification systems for the automatic capture of parcels and envelopes.

12 VIPAC top reading systems automatically capture and read barcodes on envelopes. The capture of maxi codes on parcels will be carried out at 67 three- and five-sided reading tunnels. Additionally, the volume measurement system VIPAC D captures the corresponding certified volume of the package. Including the systems already installed, 136 VIPAC identification systems with more than 330 cameras will be operating at the Cologne/Bonn hub by the end of next year.

Long-time co-operation of VITRONC and UPS
The current UPS order is the continuation of a long-term successful co-operation: In 1997 the first project with 20 VIPAC identification systems was realized at the Fechenheim (Germany) site – the biggest UPS Hub in Europe at that time. Two years later, the central WorldPort in Louisville, Kentucky was equipped with 167 three-sided reading systems and 28 top-side reading systems. Further systems have been installed at the sites in Brus-sels/Belgium, Paris/France and Nuneaton/England.

In Fechenheim, the first generation of the in-house developed VITRONIC high-performance line-scan autofocus camera guaranteed the automatic reading of barcodes. In 2011 the systems were replaced by multi-sided reading systems of the latest technology.

Since its foundation in 1984, VITRONIC GmbH, headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, offers machine vision systems in industrial automation, logistics and traffic technology. The product range spans from standard products to individually customized solutions. All products are developed, designed and produced in-house by VITRONIC. VITRONIC's core competence in the field of logistics are fully automated identification solutions for warehousing, distribution and parcel logistics. High-resolution line-scan cameras and powerful software solutions that include videocoding and monitoring acquire all relevant information and allow reading rates of up to 100 percent – as basis for a higher degree of automation, more efficient processes and reduced costs.
The company is the among the world's leading industrial machine vision companies and has a workforce of about 400 in five continents. VITRONIC products are currently in use in 40 countries.
