Barbecues – Obstacles on the path to a beach body?!
Press release from: Omron Healthcare
The barbecue season has started and invites all fans of grilled meat to join. In the right atmosphere, with family or friends, it is more than alluring to enjoy some delicious food. But the things that taste so good on BBQ’s are often mean calorie bombs. Even though the spring was spent with disciplined training and conscious eating to get rid of some extra pounds, the images and scents of juicy steaks, fresh baguettes and tempting sauces get us off the track. Of course, there is no need to miss out on everything, but a lot of the food is not a good and healthy basis for a trained body. With a better understanding of the containing calories, one can easily avoid the biggest calorie traps and maintain a perfect beach body!
‘Hearty meals’ does not equal ‘full of calories’
Beside the right coal on the grill, the meat is the most important factor for a successful barbecue. Whether steaks, sausages, burger or pork ribs – the choice is immense, the decision far from being easy. On top of that, we dip the meat in plenty of sauces and eat the salads with a lot of mayonnaise. Congratulations: Your beach body will say goodbye! Everyone who likes to enjoy hearty barbecue pork consumes 224 kcal per 4-oz. The average beef burger contains even 304 kcal, followed by a chicken drumstick, which has almost the same amount of calories. The list can be continued eternally. Those numbers do not only sound mighty, they unfortunately are. If you want to maintain a calorie-conscious eating routine also during barbecue season, you should put low-fat meat on your plate. Healthier alternatives are fillets, which contain about 100-120 kcal in 3.5-oz. With only 100 kcal, turkey and chicken breast can be eaten without hesitation. A little bit more expensive, but really low in calories, are fish and seafood. Leave out the mighty sauces, and just spice them with lemon, herbs and garlic – Delicious!
Attention sauce-sinners
Whether with chili, curry or sour cream – for many people, sauces are the perfect component to meat and thereby indispensable at barbecues. Exotic and extravagant flavours stimulate the appetite and make us eat more than normally. It’s a shame that even a small amount of sauce is full of sugar! Especially red variations contain much sugar, while white sauces are very fatty. The list of ingredients on the products provides a good and detailed overview of the containing substances. If sugar is the first item on the list, put the sauce back on the shelf! Try fat-low yoghurt products as an alternative. Also, calorie-low dips are easily prepared with yoghurt, onions, dried tomatoes and herbs. People who like their meat or fish with marinade should not use oil but plain yoghurt. In the end, it can be spiced up with herbs and garlic.
Eat plenty without worries
Noodles, potatoes, rice or green salad – side dishes have to be on every plate at a barbecue. They are not only healthy and filling, but also contain fewer calories if you prepare them the right way. Potatoes baked with herbs in aluminum foil are delicious and have only 175 kcal in 8.8-oz. Grilled vegetables on a spit are particularly calorie-low and colourful side dishes. Equally good are tasty salads with fresh vegetables and balsamic-dressing, which can be enjoyed without remorse.
Calorie management for a healthy lifestyle
Whether at barbecues, during office breaks, at breakfast or dinner – Everyone who develops a consciousness for calories makes a big step towards a healthier life. Support is made by the CaloriScan from Omron. Measuring exactly the daily calorie consumption for 24 hours a day, this device is a useful companion at barbecues as well as during sport. It differentiates and classifies any kind of movement, in daily life and training. The walk to the grill or real physical fitness – thanks to the 3-D sensor technology, the CaloriScan detects the various activities and calculates them reliably. Therefore, users can monitor their individual calorie consumptions and know quickly whether or not the next steak is a sin.
