New Standards in China for Furniture
Press release from: SGS Consumer Testing Services
The bodies responsible for standards in the People’s Republic of China, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and Standardization Administration (SAC) cooperate on international standards committees as well as defining their own national standards that apply to products on the Chinese market and are numbered with the prefix GB, from the Chinese word for standard.
GB 28010-2011 specification for hongmu furniture
Hongmu furniture must for the first time have a “Product Quality Card” attached in a special format. The manufacturer provides details on the card of the testing standards applied, a classification of product workmanship, the level of product quality and the expected uses of the product and its main materials. Should a customer later discover the product does not conform to the label’s information, the label provides evidence when claiming.
GB 28007-2011 specification for children's furniture
This standard applies to all furniture products for children aged 3 to 14 and includes a specification of the scope, terms, general requirements, safety requirements, testing requirements, testing methods (www.sgs.com/en/Consumer-Goods-Retail/Hardgoods/Home-Furni...), definitions, labels, warning signs and instructions. The standard covers furniture made from all kinds of material: wood, metals, plastics and upholstered material. Although some specifications are voluntary, the safety requirements and warning signs are mandatory.
GB 28008-2011 specification for glass furniture
This standard defines the terms, definitions, classification labeling, instructions, packaging, testing methods, testing standards, requirements, storage and transportation of glass furniture. Again, some specifications are voluntary, while the requirements for safety, restricted substances, performance and dimensions for glass furniture are mandatory.
Impact on manufacturers and their supply chains
The Chinese requirements for furniture define new technical criteria for production and the supply chain that help standardize the design and manufacture of furniture, thereby improving the quality of products sold on the Chinese market.
The three Chinese furniture standards set out above come into force on August 1, 2012.
