Ottobock at Orthopädie + Reha-Technik 2012

Every two years, the world leading Orthopädie + Reha-Technik trade fair in Leipzig (16 to 18 May 2012) presents the latest medical technology developments for the benefit of people with limited mobility. This year the trade fair is also opening its doors to end users on all three days for the first time.

Rather than showing products on their own, the trade fair booth designed in keeping with the new brand image follows the principle of presenting complete fitting solutions. Therapy options as well as all services and continuing education, training and certification offerings are taken into account along with marketing concepts. "Merely supplying technically mature, high-quality products is no longer sufficient," says Norbert Aumann, Managing Director of Otto Bock HealthCare Germany. "Of course it does constitute the basis. Making our customers fit for the use of our products and therefore offering added value which has a positive impact on fitting quality is important to us."

At the booth itself, 6,000 meters of cable have been laid, 6,500 square meters of panels installed and 250 spotlights positioned with the goal of providing comfortable spaces for intensive discussions and personal contact in addition to appealing product presentations. People first, proximity to the customer and intensive dialogue with product users and all stakeholders in the therapy process were and remain the focus of communication at Ottobock. This is also highlighted by the trade fair motto "Shaping the Future Together".

From product to fitting solution
As a worldwide novelty, Ottobock is presenting the C-Brace® orthosis which constitutes the first mechatronic SSCO system (Stance and Swing Phase Control Orthosis) and controls the entire gait cycle dynamically in real time. The stance and swing phases are safely regulated. The C-Brace® offers significantly greater freedom of movement for people whose musculature is impaired as a result of incomplete paraplegia, post-polio syndrome or other, neurological indications. It adapts to changing walking speeds, permits walking down stairs step-over-step and enhances safety in stumbling situations. The wearer no longer has to constantly focus on the ground while walking and is once again able to perceive the surroundings with no restrictions.

Transtibial amputees also experience a new form of mobility with the AeroLink system. Thanks to the first vacuum system without a sealing sleeve and liner material in the area of the knee, wearers are once again able to perform tasks that were previously impossible to master or required tremendous effort: crouching without extending the leg out to the side, riding a bicycle and relaxed sitting, even in confined spaces with highly bent legs. Significantly reduced skin irritation as a result of eliminating liner material and a discreet cosmetic cover make the AeroLink a real winner.

Additional highlights at the Ottobock booth include the Genium leg prosthesis system and the Michelangelo Hand. Both were already presented as prototypes in 2010 and are among the flagship products of the global market leader in prosthetics.

The MyGait surface stimulator, which closes the gap in the fitting of orthoses and implants for foot drop patients, is an innovation in the neurostimulation product field. People with dorsal flexor weakness, for example following a stroke, benefit from a much safer gait.

In the Mobility Solutions segment, Ottobock is presenting the Kimba Neo rehab buggy among other things. A practical rehab buggy suitable for everyday use has to offer functionality that meets a wide variety of requirements including those of parents, children, nursing staff, therapists and technicians. The Kimba Neo does all of that. Its functionality supports the therapy goals. It also features numerous practical adjustment possibilities and an attractive appearance.
