Vivid Racing Chooses the Scion as New Project Car
Press release from: Vivid Racing
Vivid Racing is switching gears in its project cars and has an all new 2013 Scion FR-S. Shared completely as a project with Subaru, the new BRZ and FR-S have almost identical parts except for the badging. But underneath the car, underneath the hood, and even in its small accoutrements inside, you will notice more Subaru than Scion. With that being said, the Scion and Subaru market is a great market with a solidly built vehicle.
Its 2.0 cylinder normally aspirated engine puts out 200bhp with 151 ft/lbs of torque. Not bad for the horizontally opposed boxxer motor. With a 6speed manual tranny, and rear wheel drive, its suspension is very similar to that of a 2008-2011 Subaru WRX Wagon. Inside the car, it features some nice trim with a red stitched steering wheel, shift boot, and even the reclinable, extra bolstered seats that have accents of red. Its front end is very aggressive with a lot of plastic mesh treatment that begs to be modified. The rear end and its large diffuser show off its sporty look. However, it’s yet another part that could be enhanced.
To begin the modifying process, Vivid Racing did a baseline dyno on the FR-S. It had about 40-50 miles on it, so that was probably as good a time as any to see how it ran. Vivid Racing has a Mustang AWD dyno which they can run in RWD. Typically, the Mustang Dyno shows a drivetrain loss even on 2wd of about 20%. The numbers were as expected, making 154 rear wheel horsepower and 125 ft/lbs of torque. The car has a nice high redline where you can really take advantage of the power band on the street. With their sister company, Agency Power, they plan to dive in to all the basic bolt-ons. Already underway for the car is an exhaust system and carbon fiber aero parts.
Vivid Racing is a multi-million dollar small business in the automotive aftermarket industry. They have been featured in almost every magazine about their business and cars they have built. Rob and Dan have competed in 3 Gumball 3000 events, Bullrun Rally, and featured on ESPN2's "Import Racer" TV show. Vivid Racing has also built several demo cars including some for Pepsi/Mazda and Cusco/Subaru.
