A recent study by researchers at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock found that as many as 25% of teenagers may be at risk of high blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. For teens, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute defines high blood pressure as a reading of 140 over 90 or above.

“Findings like this could be used to justify pharmacologic therapy for kids, but this is really not a good approach,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

“Blood pressure is a condition that usually responds very well to lifestyle intervention,” says Dian. “Proper diet and activity will almost always correct the condition very quickly. Parents need to start by setting the proper example. They need to be responsible for educating their children and taking action to ensure proper diet and activity. This should not wait until they know their children have high blood pressure and are potentially at risk.”

“A healthy diet and lifestyle needs to be started as early as possible to avoid problems in later years,” adds Tom. “High blood pressure used to be considered an age-related problem because it was rarely found in children or younger adults. There is a direct correlation between the increased consumption of refined and packaged foods, lack of activity and the increase in blood pressure and other ‘modern’ diseases.”

The Griesels urge parents not to put themselves or their children at risk, and to begin making positive changes today.
