Press release from: Central Veterinary Associates, P.C.
PR Agency: PRMG
VALLEY STREAM, NY — On April 21, Central Veterinary Associates’ doctors and staff received the Alley Pond Environmental Center’s (APEC) 2012 Friend of the Environment Award at APEC’s Earth Day reception in Douglaston, Queens. During the ceremony, they also received a special commendation from the Office of New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran. APEC’s Board Chairperson, Rita Sherman, also acknowledged CVA’s staff members who were in attendance for their work.
The Friend of the Environment Award is given to those organizations which support APEC and its environmental causes and make a positive impression on the community it serves. Central Veterinary Associates has provided for the care of APEC’s animals for the past 15 years free of charge. Last year, Central Veterinary Associates performed a low-cost microchip clinic at APEC’s “Pets & Pals Party” and was a sponsor for the “A Salute to NYC Biodiversity” photography contest during the Saving Urban Biodiversity Conference.
Central Veterinary Associates is the first animal hospital to receive this award. Dr. John Charos, Director, Avian and Exotics Medicine, Central Veterinary Associates, was named Friend of the Environment in 2002. Previous recipients included Irene V. Scheid, Executive Director, APEC; William Nieter, Treasurer, APEC’s Board of Directors and Dean, St. John’s University; former Queensborough President Claire Schulman; former New York State Senator Frank Padavan and former New York State Assembly Speaker Saul Weprin.
The awards ceremony was part of APEC’s Earth Day reception at the organization’s facility and was followed by a concert performance by folk guitarist and singer John Flynn. The concert was organized by Mr. Nieter.
Founded in 1972, Alley Pond Environmental Center is a nonprofit environmental education organization dedicated to educating children and adults in the New York metropolitan area, protecting and preserving Alley Pond Park, open spaces and waterbodies and advocating for sustainable environmental policies and practices. It sits on 365 acres of largely undeveloped parkland in New York City. Each year, over 50,000 people from the New York City area and Long Island come to visit APEC.
