The Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena is hosting the 9th Seminar of the Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft (DTG) from 27-29 April 2012. The Seminar aims at exploring the various aspects of Tolkien’s influence on the development of fantasy. Contributions to the international and interdisciplinary conference are in German and English. Entry is free.

Contributions include:
• Guglielmo Spirito & Emanuele Rimoli: The Inner Consistency of Reality: J.R.R. Tolkien, Flannery O’Connor, Michael D. O’Brien and Jonathan Franzen
• Anna Thayer: An Old Light Rekindled: Tolkien’s Influence on Fantasy
• Olaf Keith: The Return of the Kings. Tolkien and the Fantasy Fiction of Tad Williams
• Natalia Gonzalez de la Llana: LotR and Memorias de Idhun

The Tolkien Seminar is the interdisciplinary and international Tolkien conference of the German Tolkien Society, a registered charity. Starting in 2004 it has taken place at various universities throughout the country with annually changing topics placing an emphasis on the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien, CBE. Talks given at the Tolkien Seminar are usually published in the society’s academic yearbook, Hither Shore. The conference is open to the public but is led by academic standards.

The non-profit organisation Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft e.V. (German Tolkien Society) advances the academic engagement and circulation of the works of Professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, CBE, and other works that invoke comparison. It fosters the collaboration of different academic disciplines, organises regional Tolkien Days, the nation-wide Tolkien Thing, an annual Tolkien Conference, lectures, readings and exhibitions and publishes members’ journal Der Flammifer von Westernis as well as the academic yearbook Hither Shore, which has received the German Fantasy Award twice in the secondary literature category.
