MEI Congratulates Mexico City’s Excélsior on News Design Award

Press release from: Managing Editor Inc.

Jenkintown, PA (March 22, 2012) — Managing Editor Inc. (MEI) congratulates Mexico City’s Excélsior for being named one of the World’s Best Designed Newspapers by the Society for News Design. An MEI customer since 2006, Excélsior uses the vjoon K4™ Cross-Media Publishing Platform and MEI’s Page Director® Ad Layout System (ALS) in its daily production workflow.

The World’s Best, part of SND’s 33rd annual Best of News Design competition, were announced in February. According to the judges, Excélsior was placed at the top of the category’s 230 entries based on “its sophisticated typography, bold color palette and overall visual energy.” They were also impressed with the paper’s ability to keep its layouts consistently compelling across all sections, from sports to editorial.

Originally founded in 1917, Excélsior was purchased by healthcare/tourism/media conglomerate Grupo Angeles and relaunched in February 2006 using vjoon K4 for editorial workflow and ALS for issue planning and ad placement. MEI integration partner Informática Dalai SA de CV was crucial to the project’s success, working closely with Excélsior to implement the software. MEI is the exclusive distributor of vjoon K4 in the Americas, and the developer of ALS and other ad-layout software.

“The K4 Publishing System was the indispensable instrument to assemble and successfully launch such a challenging and big project as this one in record time,” said Daniel Moreno, editorial director for Excélsior, at the time of the installation.

“We’re proud of our partners at Dalai, and we congratulate Excélsior on this great recognition,” said MEI President and CEO Dennis McGuire. “We’re excited that our solutions are being used to manage advertising, design and editorial for one of the world’s finest daily publications.”
