San Diego, CA, Mar.07, 2012 — Registered nurses (RNs) who have spent sufficient time doing bed-side patient care and want to move to advanced nursing roles can now explore the possibility of an exciting career change within the nursing and health informatics field.

Nursing informatics, as defined by the American Nursing Informatics Association, is a specialty that combines elements of nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.

In layman’s terms, nursing informatics can be described as the application of computer and information technology to nursing practice, with the objective of improving patient care.

RNs who are interested in working in this branch of nursing can now enroll for the Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing Administration degree with a Nursing Informatics emphasis at California College San Diego (CCSD).

Designed as a completion program for practicing RNs, the degree provides students with the proficiencies they need to take on the role of nurse information manager, as well as other supervisory positions in a healthcare environment.

Registered nurses enrolled in this program are required to complete 90.5 credit hours before they can graduate. As part of the program, they will take courses such as Nursing Informatics, Health Informatics, Applied Healthcare Informatics, Case Management, Home Healthcare, Research in Nursing Practice, etc.

The BS in Nursing Administration degree with an emphasis in Nursing Informatics is available at California College San Diego’s main campus in San Diego and at its satellite location in National City.

However, RNs who are unable to attend school physically have the option of taking online classes through California College San Diego’s affiliate, Stevens-Henager College. Admission to this program is contingent on applicants meeting the following criteria:

1. Possession of a valid RN license
2. Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent GED® credential
3. Completion of an appropriate number of college and general education credits

RNs who meet the above requirements can begin the enrollment process. Once their classes are underway, they can graduate from the program in 20 months on a normal class schedule or in 15 months with CCSD’s flexible schedule.
