NewSat and MEASAT Updated Satellite Communications Deal for Jabiru 2

Press release from: NewSat
(openPR) - Australian satellite provider NewSat updated its satellite capacity agreement with MEASATA. The deal involves the acquisition of satellite capacity for Jabiru 2 satellite communications service. The transponders to be provided will have 216 MHz Ku band capacity, which is huge enough to generate nearly $110 million in revenues in 15 years. The Jabiru 2 satellite service will be mainly aimed at Asia Pacific markets. MEASAT has also entered into a separate agreement with NewSat for satellite capacity acquisition on Jabiru-1.

The original Jabiru-2 contract was signed in November 2010, but NewSat then did not reveal who was its satellite partner. NewSat said in its 2010 press release that satellite capacity would be mainly be delivered to Asia-Pacific regions like Papua New Guinea and Timor Lester. On Feb. 2012, NewSat updated the deal to include performance and technical specifications. The recent deal will leverage NewSat's presense in major Asia-Pacific and Australian markets like Kimberly and North West Shelf. NewSat confirmed that it's Jabiru-1 deal with MEASAT was worth $US180 million, though it declined to disclose the financial terms for the Jabiru 2 deal.

Based in Malaysia, MEASAT mainly serves the broadcasting and telecommunications markets. Its partnership with NewSat will allow the Australian company to secure more capacity for its Jabiru 2 service. NewSat will use Ku-band transponders on MEASAT-3b satellite and brand the service as Jabiru-2. MEASAT-3b is a geostationary satellite capable of supporting 48 high powered Ku-band transponders. It provides satellite coverage across Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia.

NewSat's stock has been improving thanks to a series of pre-launch Jabiru contracts. NewSat CEO Adrian Ballintine is optimistic that the company can get all the funding it needs to commercialize the Jabiru satellites. Last year, NewSat closed a 10-year $134 million satellite capacity contract with 3A Technology of Pakistan.
