(openPR) - Past and present students of Treloar’s school and college achieved great results at the South East regional Boccia Championships.
Treloar’s school in Hampshire is once more celebrating its sporting achievements after the school performed extremely well in the annual Boccia England South East Regional Boccia championships over the weekend of the 28th and 29th January 2012 in Woking.
Boccia is a recreational sport that was originally designed for people with cerebral palsy but is now played at both national and international level by athletes with other severe disabilities affecting motor skills. The game is known for being rather complicated and the most common comparison is to say that it is a bit like bowls with some very distinct differences. The game involves aiming leather balls at a jack and trying to knock your opponent’s balls off course with points being awarded for getting your ball closer to the jack than your opponent. It is one of only three Paralympic sports that do not have an Olympic counterpart.
The two day event in January saw 48 competitors between the four classifications, with Treloar students past and present numbering 25, with 12 of these being current school students, four current college students and nine former students.
For many of the students it was their first time competing in a sporting event and they achieved a series of great results winning 50 of their 86 matches. Two of the competitors who deserve a special mention are William Arnott and Jasper MacCall who both narrowly missed out on a place in the next round despite excellent performances.
The Treloar Trust is made up of a school and a college whose main goal is to prepare young people with physical disabilities for adult life by providing them with the skills and confidence to achieve their full potential.
The school is already being recognised for its sporting achievements with three nominations for the East Hampshire District Sports Awards 2012 including coach of the year for Boccia coach Barry Bowden as well as volunteer of the year and team of the year.
