Kögel Managing Director informs about efficiency optimisation of commercial vehicles and development trends in the trailer sector

The highlights of development at Kögel are the lightweight and aerodynamic solutions and alternative types of drive

The manager and development manager at Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Thomas Eschey, Managing Director Technology at Kögel and experts from other trailer manufacturers came together in the run-up of the "Trailer 2011" exhibition in Kortrijk at the symposium "The new Actros Truck & Trailer“. The subject of this event is the perfect symbiosis of semi-trailer tractor units and trailers. As a group, the experts took a look at the significant questions, trends and opportunities of efficiency enhancement of vehicle combinations.

Kögel has its hand on the pulse of time
The south-German trailer manufacturer achieves weight reduction, and the associated fuel savings, by using specific calculation methods and simulation models, amongst other things, as used in the automobile industry and the aerospace industry. High-strength fine-grained steels, the most modern textured sheeting and composite materials also make a contribution to weight optimisation. "Customer-oriented use of modern composite materials has always been close to the top of our list“, said Thomas Eschey, Managing Director Technology and Production at Kögel. "We are collaborating closely with universities and competence centres on the issues of aerodynamics, reducing rolling resistance and lightweight construction."

Efficient product solutions
Current semi-trailers, such as the Kögel Mega Trailer and the Kögel Euro Trailer have already been weight-optimised. The most modern development and manufacturing methods result in a clear weight reduction and thus also reduce fuel consumption as a result. The Mega Trailer shown at the exhibition logistic 2011 has two specific advantages: Firstly, it has an external height of precisely four metres and an internal height of three metres and, above all, a weight reduction of the frame whilst maintaining its stability. In addition, the Kögel Euro Trailer guarantees opportunities for savings - at ten percent more volume and an additional useable loading length of 1.3 metres, the Euro Trailer has the identical consumption as a normal 40 ton unit.

Kögel, a brand with a tradition going back more than 75 years, and which has achieved first place throughout Europe, is once again at the centre of things with their unmistakable experience and competence.
