Gay Pride Video Launched in Derry

A fascinating and thought-provoking documentary, launched this week, about Derry’s gay pride marches is pioneering an innovative approach to reach as wide an audience as possible.

The film, Pride in Our City, has achieved over 1000 views on Vimeo, Facebook and various sites in just days after its release, using only free to access, online distribution and some clever thinking.

The film features the views of notable journalist and writer Eamonn McCann and a number of key players involved in Derry’s Pride marches, examining opposition to the yearly parade from religious fundamentalist groups.

Promoting the film is a forward thinking new Northwest company called Digital Derry who accepted the challenge to help promote the challenging documentary as part of their Sharing Stories film project.

The aim is to use free social media tools to help promote the short film, made locally in association with the Nerve Centre.

Speaking to Studenty.me, Mark Nagurski from the Digital Derry project said: “It’s really interesting to be involved in helping promote such a well-made local film. Social media is ultimately about conversations and good filmmaking can’t accomplish exactly the same thing.

“What I’d really love to see from this project is that the two work in harmony to kickstart an interesting, engaging conversation. And in a virtuous circle kind of way, that conversation will help raise the film’s profile.”

Digital Derry is a collaborative project involving private, public and academic organisations to promote and grow the digital content sector in Derry-Londonderry and the North-West, and has already given the film a well deserved boost.

The company is also asking members of the public for suggestions as to how it further promote the film and its many other projects via social media, inviting you to draft up a quick list of steps that you would take and send it through. The best suggestions will be posted on their site or your own for the Digital Derry team to link to.
