Corvus Energy’s Technology Selected for Eco Marine Power Projects

10-27-2011 02:51 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Eco Marine Power

Eco Marine Power (EMP) today announced that it has selected Corvus Energy as a strategic technology provider for a range of ongoing development projects including the Aquarius wind & solar power system for ships, the Aquarius eco ship and Medaka urban solar-electric commuter ferry.

A range of Corvus Energy technologies such as the AT6500 Energy Storage Module & Battery Management System will be incorporated into Eco Marine Power’s cutting edge marine renewable energy designs.

The Corvus Energy AT6500 series battery modules offer exceptional performance for use in renewable energy solutions for ships and vessels. Each module has the ability to be combined to form a custom sized pack - from 6.5 kWh to multi-megawatt sized applications. The modules can be configured in any number of ways to build the size of battery pack required. The CanBus communication port located on the AT6500 module provides the ability to do this. Each Installation is supported with a system controller to provide the management control to coordinate all the modules in a pack.

The EMP Aquarius System will incorporate Corvus Energy’s AT6500 Lithium NMC Technology thereby allowing energy collected via the solar panels to be stored for use when the ship is at anchor or in harbour. The Corvus Battery Management System (BMS) will also enable to energy collected from the solar panels to be used while the ship is underway as required.

The Aquarius System is designed to provide ship owners and shipping lines with a cost effective way to tap into the limitless energy provided by the sun and wind. The system uses an array of rigid but movable sails to collect wind and solar energy which are positioned by a computer system taking into account such things as the speed of the ship and prevailing weather conditions. The system can even be used while a ship is at anchor or in harbour.

Greg Atkinson of Eco Marine Power said “The emission of noxious gases while ships are in harbour or at anchor waiting to load/unload is a major environmental and health concern. By incorporating Corvus Energy’s technologies into the Aquarius System we can significantly reduce these emissions by providing a clean & renewable source of power for ships which can even be used when the ship is in port.”

EMP will also utilise Corvus Energy’s cutting edge Lithium ion battery technology for the Tonbo solar-electric HMP vessel and Medaka urban solar-electric ferry projects.

Eco Marine Power Co. Ltd. (EMP) is an internationally focused technology company based in Fukuoka, Japan that develops and markets innovative eco-friendly solar, wind and electric marine power & propulsion systems. The company works with a number of strategic partners to offer a wide range of solutions including Hybrid Marine Power (HMP), solar marine power, solar-electric marine power and wind & solar marine power systems for ships, ferries and other vessels.

Eco Marine Power is also currently developing a wind power and solar energy system for ocean going vessels called the Aquarius System. (Patent Pending) This innovative system will allow ships to utilise wind power and solar energy via an integrated system of rigid movable sails to reduce fuel consumption and lower noxious gas emissions.

In addition ship owners and operators will be able to reduce the CO2 footprint of their fleet and employ the Aquarius System on a wide variety of ships and vessels. The Aquarius system will make ocean going vessels part solar ships and part sailing ships. The system is particularly suited for oil tankers, bulk ore carriers (bulkers) and survey ships.

The EMP Aquarius System is also being designed so that it will require little attention from the ships crew, will be relatively easy to install and offer an attractive ROI (Return on Investment) for shipping companies and ship owners. The Aquarius system will help shape the future of green shipping and will provide a practical way for ships to tap into the inexhaustible power provided by the wind and sun.

Another cutting-edge green technology development project being undertaken by Eco Marine Power is the Tonbo solar-electric ferry or hybrid marine power (HMP) concept vessel. This innovative design project incorporates the latest solar module, battery and electrical power management technology so that the Tonbo's fuel consumption and emission of noxious gases will be significantly less than other ships or ferries of the same size.

EMP also recently started working on a small solar-electric commuter ferry concept called the Medaka and is also studying how large scale renewable energy technologies can be incorporated into large ship designs via it's eco-ship study.
