For the past several years, every year on Gandhi Jayanti day, the school has been conducting this event in which various schools spread over Jhunjhunu district participate.

Located in the heart of Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, Pilani is well known in India today for various top ranking educational institutions, CSIR Laboratory CEERI as well as the upcoming BrahMos Missile Assembly Project unit.

For the debate held this year on October 02, 2011 the venue was the impressive auditorium of Goenka Vidya Mandir Pilani. The topic of the debate was “Vocational Education Leads to Bright Future for India”. Sixteen schools from the district keenly participated in the debate. Aditi Priya from Birla Balika Vidya Peeth – BBVP Pilani famous for the NCC Band which has been marching at Raj path for the last 52 years with her impressive argument speaking against the motion bagged the first prize. In fact Aditi was a band leader at Raj Path this year along with Pooja and Akansha of BBVP. Shobha Kanoria of host Goenka school also won a prize. Continuing the tradition, the rolling trophy was awarded to the Seksaria Saraswati Girls Senior Secondary School Nawalgarh. The performance of Yash from Bagar School also got a special prize.

Chief Guest Prof BR Natarajan Pro Vice Chancellor Shridhar Univeristy Pilani distributed the prizes to the winners and also gave a gift pack on behalf of the host Goenka school to each of the judges Dr Rajesh Purohit from Birla Institute of Technology and Science – BITS Pilani, Dr Mishra and Dr Chandrasekhar.

Addressing the audience Prof Natarajan talked about the importance of vocational education in the current Indian context and lamented that only about 2% of students in India were pursuing such courses as against other countries like Russia (60%) and China (55%). Vocational education in the country is offered by about 2000 government institutions (ITI) and 3000 private institutions. As per Planning Commission calculations, it is expected that the ageing economy phenomenon will globally create a skilled human resource shortage of approximately 56.5 million by 2020 and if India can get the skill development act right, the country could have a skilled human resource surplus of approximately 47 million.

It was an eye opener to the audience when Prof Natarajan pointed out that KVIC (Khadi & Village Industries Commission) and Ramakrishna Mission Institutions also offer several vocational training programmes and urged the public at large to respect all forms of learning – formal, non formal and vocational equally. Prof Natarajan thanked Goenka Pariwar and Smt Usha Sharma, Shri Ashok Sharma, Shri Solankiji and Shri MP Somaniji of Goenka School for organizing such thought provoking debates year after year. The function ended with singing of National Anthem.
