3rd "EURO ID 2007" International Trade Fair

Cologne/Düsseldorf, 23. April 2007. The 3rd EURO ID International Trade Fair 2007 in Cologne is getting off to a good start. Over 1,500 visitors have already registered and over 100 exhibitors will be introducing new developments associated with automatic identification. Along with numerous players in the auto-ID and RFID markets, companies such as SAP, Siemens and Dematic have decided to take part in the trade fair for the first time in 2007, while others, such as SATO for example, have registered again. "This is striking evidence that the transition from a hardware-based trade fair to a solutions-based trade fair has been successful," explains Peter Altes, Managed Events Manager at IBC EUROFORUM GmbH. Visitors will even be able to see live demonstrations of how automatic data recording and mobile data communication can record and track the flow of goods. Current and future auto-ID techniques such as RFID, barcodes, "pick by voice" and intelligent shelves will be demonstrated in brief presentations in the Tracking & Tracing Theatre. The show act will be introduced by AIM EMEA, the Automatic Identification, Data Recording and Mobile Data Communication Association, which is also the organisation backing EURO ID 2007. The 3rd International Trade Fair and Knowledge Forum for automatic identification will be taking place from 8–10 May 2007, at EXPO XXI in Cologne´s Expocentre. More information can be obtained on the Internet at www.euro-id-tradefair.com/pr.

Automatic identification for the materials and goods flow

Siemens will be exhibiting identification products associated with the trendsetting data matrix code and RFID technologies. These are mobile and stationary 1D/2D code-reading devices, RFID systems for production and logistics, their integration into MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) with Simatic IT and the unified RFID software Simatic RF Manager. Simatic RF Manager drives writing and reading devices, gathers and condenses RFID data and supplies them to warehousing systems or MES. Siemens will be introducing its Simatic HawkEye 4x, a series of hand-held reading devices for identifying 1D and 2D codes, which can accurately identify a large number of codes of varying cell sizes and contrast situations.

Examples of RFID solutions for intra-logistics

Dematic, one of the world´s leading suppliers of automated logistics, will be exhibiting solutions for RFID implementation specially for the medium-sized sector at EURO ID. The focus here will be on asset management for circulating load carriers, such as containers, pallets, transporters, forklift guide systems with tags in the floor and, additionally, on shelves for use in warehouses and in material-flow control systems. The Dematic Subdriver enables the direct coupling of SPS (stored programmable control) to SAP. The solution consists of inserting an additional communications group whose driver programmes accept SPS messages and translate them into SAP calls. The principle also functions conversely. Existing programmes in the SPS are retained unaltered. Depending on the network architecture, the building group provides one or two IP addresses. Dr Christoph Dönges, Manager of the Competence Center Logistics at Dematic, will speak on Dematic "RFID integration in software systems" in his address on the first day of the exhibition in the Consultants´ Corner. And full information and case studies will be available to all visitors at Dematic´s EURO ID stand. In addition, a working exhibit will provide an example of the link between conveyance technology and RFID.

RFID marking systems

SATO, the world´s leader in label and barcode printers and a specialist in data collection systems and RFID labelling technology, will be introducing a wide range of RFID solutions, from the simple HF and UHF RFID printers (ultra-high frequency) to semi and fully automatic pallet labelling equipment at EURO ID. Together with Accenture and ThyssenKrupp Steel, SATO has developed a modified version of its UHF RFID FlagTags for RFID marking of "Brammen" (steel slabs) at ThyssenKrupp Steel. "Brammen" are blocks of cast steel, which are normally several metres long and several metres wide. SATO originally developed the RFID FlagTag in cooperation with firms such as Nestlé for use in the automatic marking of pallets, since the FlagTag achieves a very high reading rate for the RFID radio signal, even with difficult materials such as metals or liquids. As well as its CL408e RFID UHF RFID label-printer, SATO also intends introducing its S84xx high-performance printing module and a completely mobile trolley solution with its SATO GTe RFID printer at EURO ID. The S84xx printing module is specially designed for automatic labelling equipment, operating 24 hours a day in an industrial environment. The SATO trolley system is a complete and autonomous printing station, which is suitable for mobile marking in a warehouse environment, both in "slap & ship" labelling with RFID labels and in traditional marking with barcode labels.

A practice-oriented trade fair

The emphases of the 3rd EURO ID International Trade Fair are on comprehensive end-to-end solutions and unified data communication, the integration of operating systems - for example, with printers and mobile scanners, standardised Plug & Play solutions for auto-ID hardware and software, mobile data recording and data communication, together with decentralised solutions and near field communication. Interesting aspects will be the applications introduced at the fair as well as in the areas of logistics, commerce and production, especially for the services sector and sectors such as health care, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and medical technology.
