FRA Reports on APEC Praise for Chinese Forestry Approach

Press release from: Forestry Research Associates
(openPR) - Seattle, US, September 14, 2011 -- APEC officials have congratulated China’s efforts to boost sustainable forestry management, according to Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

The minister from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) spoke out on September 7 to commend the efforts made by China

Ministers and senior officials responsible for forestry from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies on Wednesday commended China's contribution to sustainable forestry management. Migual Cailux Zazzali, who is the Minister of Agriculture in Peru, stated, "China has done a great job in preventing illegal logging and recovering its forest resources through increasing public awareness of forestry and environmental protection and deepening forestry reforms.”

Meanwhile, Igor A. Razumovskiy, the Department of International Cooperation of the Russian Federation Federal Forestry Agency’s councilor, added that he welcomed statistics showing that forest cover was expanding in Asia, while in many other continents, forest cover was still falling.

Forestry Research Associates (FRA), a research and analysis consultancy, was backing the support being shown for China. “The more recognition the Chinese government gets from its foreign neighbours, for its measures to stop deforestation and encourage aforestation, the more likely the trend for investment and policy change will continue,” added Peter Collins, an analysis partner a FRA. The news that the forest covering in Asia is increasing was particularly welcomed by FRA.

Chinese is not alone in bringing in more control over use of forests and their management. FRA explained that Brazil has made major efforts to try to reduce illegal logging in recent years. It is also dong all it can to encourage foreign investors to put their money into sustainable forestry schemes in Brazil to provide an alternative to native species.

Firms like Greenwood Management are inviting people to directly invest in plantations of non-native trees that will provide timber and charcoal for Brazilian and Asian markets.
