Pet care specialist urges dog owners to check their pet’s teeth

Pet care specialist Rolf C. Hagen is urging dog owners to regularly check the condition of their dog’s teeth to help avoid the development of serious dental diseases. Just like humans, dogs need to keep their teeth clean and healthy to keep them in top condition and prevent bad breath. Bacteria resulting from poor dental health can also lead to other medical problems affecting organs including the kidneys and heart, so good dental hygiene is vital for a dog’s overall wellbeing.

Inspecting a dog’s teeth is relatively simple although care should be taken to avoid getting nipped! Gently lift the lips around the mouth and look closely at the gums and teeth for signs of trouble. Look for any bleeding, red or puffy gums and any teeth that are missing or broken. If there is any sign of trouble veterinary advice should be sought immediately.

There are lots of things owners can do to help keep their dog’s teeth in good condition including making sure his diet includes foods such as crunchy biscuits to reduce the formation of plaque, as well as the occasional bone to chew. Some owners may wish to try brushing, although this is best introduced early when the dog is still a puppy.
