Southwest-Gallery.com opens photography exhibit, Battle of Earth and Sky

Thunderstorms gather over mountain peaks of the American Southwest in the afternoon. Although lightening is always a concern, the collision between jagged peaks and threatening clouds makes for turbulent and romantic images. The photographs in the new exhibit at Southwest-Gallery.com suggest massive sets for a production of Faust or Götterdämmerung. There are no human references -- people are irrelevant in the face of such a vast conflict.

The following photographs are included in exhibit:

* TLR00122. On the approach to a summit, gathering clouds hint at the storm that will follow. In warning, the mountain top is lost in black obscurity.

* TLR00123. The sky explodes from behind jagged, snow covered peaks.

* TLR00124. The land rises to meet the challenge of sinister approaching clouds. The snow covering the surrounding peaks and valley floor gives an illusion of a negative print. The view from Wheeler Peak (New Mexico) in the late fall is the featured work of the exhibit.

* SLR00130. Clouds and shadows march across an fantasy landscape to engulf the viewer.

* TLR00125. A wall of clouds bounds from ambush behind a darkened ridge.

* SLR00131. A surreal maze of spires, clefts and battlements meets the sky.

* TLR00126. Flowing clouds rush around a stark ridge defense.

* TLR00127. Shadows engulf a deep canyon, between distant shining mountains and stark cliffs in the foreground.

* TLR00128. A thunderhead rises over a softened landscape of peaks and forested valleys. Sheets of rain engulf a distant mountain.

* TLR00129. Descent from the peak over snow fields with settling sky.

* TLR00130. The storm withdraws, leaving a sunlit mountain meadow with shining grasses.

* SLR00132. A peaceful, horizontal composition with sky and earth restored to balance. View from Trailriders Ridge, Pecos Wilderness.

The 35 mm and 57 mm monochrome images were recorded in the Wehminuche, Wheeler Peak and Peco Wilderness Areas between 1985 and 1992.
