Yani Tseng breaks LPGA record with fourth major win

Press release from: Presseabteilung Taipeh Vertretung
By Meg Chang

Taiwan’s Yani Tseng, 22, became the youngest player in history to win four major Ladies Professional Golf Association tournament titles when she bagged the Wegmans LPGA Championship June 26.

According to the LPGA, the previous record holder was Patty Berg, who accomplished the feat at the 1941 Western Open when she was 23 years old. Tiger Woods made his mark at the age of 24.

Tseng began the day in Pittsford, New York, with a five-shot lead. After struggling on the first hole with a bogey, Tseng soon recovered with three birdies in a row.

“I felt much better after the second hole. It was a totally different mindset from the first one.” She doubled the advantage to grab her eighth victory on the LPGA Tour since she joined the league in 2008.

Morgan Pressel of the U.S., first runner-up in the match, said, “It’s definitely a dominating performance. She didn’t make any mistake this week.”

An emotional Tseng said she almost cried on the way to the award presentation ceremony. “I am all the way from Taiwan, another country. But the people here are really supportive of me. I really appreciate that.”

The 19-under-par win also tied the record for the lowest 72-hole score in an LPGA major, according to the association.

The golfing sensation’s three previous major wins were the 2008 LPGA Championship, the 2010 Kraft Nabisco Championship and the 2010 Ricoh Women’s British Open.

The title will further secure Tseng’s reign as No. 1 on the Rolex Rankings, a position she has held for 19 weeks as of June 20. Tseng began the 2011 season as the No. 5 player on the list, but two wins in February helped her dethrone South Korea’s Jiyai Shin to become the world’s top female golfer February 14.

The young golf phenomenon has her eyes set on the U.S. Women’s Open, scheduled for July 4 to 10 in Colorado Springs. If she can capture that title, Tseng would become the youngest player to accomplish a career grand slam.
