DALLAS EQUALITY RALLY TAPS PHOTO DOCUMENTARY CREATOR AS SPEAKER

Jason Beckett joins the roster of speakers at the North Texas March for Equality.

20 June, 2011 - Dallas, TX - Organizers of the annual North Texas March for Equality announced today that 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary creator, Jason Beckett will join the roster of speakers set to address the crowd of marchers who will be gathered to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on June 25th at the JFK Memorial in downtown Dallas.

"While the march and rally are set to commemorate an historic moment in the modern LGBT movement, the conversation of equality goes far beyond the gay community," explains march organizer Daniel Cates. "We want to use this weekend to expand the public perception of equality beyond the narrow focus of LGBT issues and encourage people to see that we are all affected by this struggle; gay rights are human rights; women's rights are human rights; children's rights are human rights; my rights, your rights, their rights are human rights - and that's what the 'I AM EQUAL' documentary project is all about."

The 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary is a 7-year, 125,000 photo project created by Jason Beckett and international fashion photographer Matt Spencer as a record-breaking campaign to highlight and document the many facets of equality that affect our communities.

"There is no agenda to the 'I AM EQUAL' project or specific cause that's being championed," explains Beckett. "We very deliberately created this project to ensure that people from all walks of life are given an opportunity to have their unique voice heard regardless of the issues or causes they support. There are those who are photographed for women's rights or ending domestic violence, while others are fighting to protect children and end slavery in Southeast Asia. Some people join the project for LGBT rights and marriage equality alongside others who are struggling for religious freedom or immigration reform. Vegans are showing up for sustainable farming and organics, while others want to raise the banner of cancer survivors, autism, or Asperger syndrome . The fact is, all these people are part of the same conversation of equality and deserve to be heard."

Beckett promises that his part of the rally will focus on "broad inclusion in the equality conversation" and a strong push to ensure that the LGBT activists "look beyond the specific issues that face their community and reach out to other groups and individuals who need champions and support" so as to build a coalition for equality that "truly moves our nation forward."

Along with his participation in the rally and march, Beckett will also have the 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary team set up in the Aloft Downtown Dallas Hotel starting 11:00am on Saturday where the public can take a photo for the campaign and be part of breaking a world record. Participation is open to all ages and takes less than 5 minutes. Those wanting to take part should wear a brightly colored solid shirt and be camera ready (hair and make-up complete) before having their photo taken.

The North Texas March for Equality will begin at 6:30pm at the JFK Memorial where a short rally will mark the begin of the march and will include presentations from Rev. Dr. Stephen V. Sprinkle from the Cathedral of Hope, Rafael McDonnell from Resource Center Dallas, and other local activists, authors, and artists from the community.

ABOUT THE 'I AM EQUAL' PROJECT

The 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary was created by Jason Beckett and fashion photographer Matt Spencer in an effort to empower individuals to speak out about the causes that inspire them. The project goal is to capture more than 100,000 photos of people from all walks of life with the “I AM EQUAL” logo emblazoned on the palm of their hand as a symbol of their commitment to stand up for their rights, and the rights of others around the world. Ultimately, all the photos will be gathered together to create the world's largest photo mosaic composed of 2in. photo tiles and covering more than 8,000 sq/ft.
