(openPR) - On May 11, 2011, SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, held a Risk Management Conference in Santiago, Chile, which proved to be a great success.

Organized by the SGS Industrial Services division in Chile, the conference on Risk Management provided a perfect meeting place to forge new business contacts, network and learn more about Project Services during a wide range of informative presentations.

Vice President of Global Risk Management, Jale Cairney, initially held a presentation on Risk Management for mega projects and revealed a mega projects case study. Jale talked in her presentation about the average outcome of mega projects in terms of costs, schedule and performance, explaining the reasons behind cost increases, project delays and performance failures, while elaborating the importance of quantitative Risk Management practices for this type of project. In the case study on mega projects, she explained the benefits of Project Risk Management practices and how they should be applied, using examples from a case study.

Furthermore, attendees of the event had a unique opportunity to learn about the concessions plan 2011-2014 with a presentation given by Lorena León, Chief of Financial Structures at Chile’s Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Obras Públicas). Thereafter, Javier Reguart, expert on Hospital Concessions at SGS Project Services in Chile, held a speech, entitled ‘Risk Management for Concessions in Healthcare.’ Javier explained the importance of a proactive benchmarking and learning approach, illustrated with successful best practices and experiences developed worldwide. Javier stated that the help of a reliable third-party company, which identifies risks in every phase of a project’s lifecycle and analyzes the financial sustainability of a project, is indispensable in attracting investors to the project.

The Risk Management Conference was closed with a presentation by Santiago Mazzuchelli Urquijo, Business Development Manager of Project Services in South America and Spain, on the importance of added value from quantitative Risk Management in Project Management activities and how SGS can help in managing concessions effectively. The SGS conference was rewarded with very positive feedback by the participants and proved to be a great success.
