Chicago Elder Law Attorneys Donate Legal Services To Low-Income Seniors

Press release from: Peck Bloom, LLC

CHICAGO, IL -- On March 30, 2011, Katie McClanahan of Peck Bloom, LLC participated in a Women's Bar Association community outreach event. The event was entitled "Senior Center Workshop" and was sponsored by the Women's Bar Association and the Center for Disability and Elder Care. The workshop provided low-income seniors with free access to elder law attorneys in Chicago who assisted them with various aspects of estate planning.

This was the first time the Association has planned such an event and McClanahan was instrumental in helping it come to fruition. She was also on hand to provide her legal expertise on the day of the event as well. Low-income seniors who wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to create estate plan documents received in-person assistance from elder law lawyers in Chicago. Attorneys were on hand to advise the seniors on issues ranging from power of attorney or health care directives to living wills. The pro-bono legal services that were provided by Chicago elder law attorneys allowed seniors who were interested to leave with powers of attorney for health care and for property as well as living wills. A letter fully explaining each document, its intent and how it should be used was included with each document.

"Katie did a tremendous job helping to organize this event. The event took very little time to organize but it had a huge impact on these senior citizens. Elder law attorneys were able to meet with and talk to each senior and develop a comprehensive, personalized plan for each person. This is especially noteworthy because without this outreach event, most of the people served would not have otherwise had access to these legal services," explained Kate Konieczny, Marketing Coordinator for Peck Bloom LLC (www.peckbloom.com).

Although, many forms can be found online to create your own power of attorney, the added benefit for seniors attending this event was access to free legal advice from highly experienced elder law lawyers in Chicago. Attorneys were available to fully explain each document and sort out any confusion the attendees may have had.

"These seniors can now rest a little easier knowing that their wishes will be fulfilled and their healthcare and financial decisions taken care of by people they trust. With estate plan documents such as those provided at the outreach event, these seniors have ensured they won't have a guardian appointed for them. At the end of the day, this is what elder care lawyers do: help seniors plan their future the way they envision it," noted Konieczny.
