SILVER SPRING, MD (May 20, 2011) – Riderwood retirement community resident William E. May, Ph.D. has received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from The Institute for the Psychological Sciences (IPS) during the institute’s Tenth Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises held May 19 at Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He gave the commencement address.

Professor May, a former IPS visiting faculty member, is currently a Senior Research Fellow of the Culture of Life Foundation and emeritus Michael J. McGivney Professor of Moral Theology at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

In addition, Professor May is the author and co-author of many books, among them Catholic Sexual Ethics; Humanae Vitae: A Defense; and Introduction to Moral Theology. He is also the author of more than 200 articles in such journals as The Thomist, Anthropotes, Scripta Theologica, Annales Theologici, and Linacre Quarterly.

Professor May received his doctorate in philosophy from Marquette University in 1968 with a study of the metaphysics of Henri Bergson. Professor May, at the appointment of Pope John Paul II, served on the International Theological Commission from 1986 through 1997.

Since 1958 Professor May has been married to Patricia Keck May. They are the parents of seven children and the grandparents of 15 grandchildren, with a 16th grandchild coming next month.

The Virginia-based Institute for the Psychological Sciences, an institution of higher education offering Master’s and Doctoral degrees, affiliated with the Legionaries of Christ, is dedicated to the renewal of the Christian intellectual tradition and the development of a psychology consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church and in constructive dialogue with the modern world.
