Nintendo 3DS Sales Weaker Than Expected

05-09-2011 06:05 PM CET | IT, New Media & Software

Press release from: Techshu

Nintendo on April 26, 2011 stated that its latest 3DS sales were disappointing in countries like Japan, US and Europe. In the U.S. and Europe, only 3.61 million units were sold whereas it had expected to sell at least 4 million by April 2011, the end of its fiscal year.

Nintendo 3DS is considered as a revolution in the gaming arena as this handheld gaming console enables users to play 3D games without the need of wearing specialized glasses to play 3dgames. It debuted in Japan on 26th February.
At a recent investor meeting, president Satoru Iwata acknowledged that sales are not where they want them to be, saying, "The initial sales were healthy; however, the sales speed slowed down from the third week after its launch which is not what we had expected for the start-up transition."

For the US market, Iwata said that the "Nintendo 3DS started very well but, on the other hand, did not perform as expected after the second week." In Europe, "sales were high in the initial week, but sales fell below our expectations after the second week", Iwata added.

Iwata also mentioned about the earthquake and tsunami which badly hit Japan’s economy in March as one of reasons for 3DS shortfall. He also said that, "There are other challenges that have shown up; therefore, we have revised our scenario for diffusion and are making efforts to get the popularity of Nintendo 3DS back on track for the upcoming summer season."
