- Engineering service provider Garner CAD Technic GmbH benefits from complex upgrade after only six months
- Detailed case study coming soon

Munich, Germany. 9 March 2011 – TPG The Project Group, a full-service provider of enterprise-wide products and services, announced today that it completed a complex migration to Microsoft Project Server 2007 at Garner CAD Technic GmbH (GCT) in less than six months. The upgrade involved migrating a system containing about 1000 projects for GCT, which provides engineering services to aerospace companies. A key part of the project was to upgrade SharePoint to the 2007 version in order to streamline and accelerate communications and data sharing between GCT and its customers. An interface between Microsoft Project and Microsoft Dynamics NAV was also implemented.

As an international aerospace engineering firm, German-based Garner CAD Technic GmbH (GCT) is constantly sharing data with its customers – who include Boeing und EADS – during each of the engineering processes. These processes range from the creation of complete design plans, the certification of aircraft, and the development of design solutions covering the whole product lifecycle. Susanne Bohlin, IT Strategy Manager at GCT, comments: “Many of our customers and partners had either migrated to the 2007 versions of these products already, or were planning to do so in the near future.” A further reason for the upgrade was to benefit from the new functionality in Microsoft Project 2007 and SharePoint, such as security enhancements and the container hierarchy for storing and sharing information across projects. Along with the systems themselves, the team needed to migrate around 1000 engineering projects from Microsoft Project Server 2003 to the 2007 version. “GCT had worked very successfully with TPG The Project Group several years earlier during the selection and implementation of our previous Microsoft Project system. That made it easy to choose our service provider this time around,” adds Bohlin.

Working together, TPG and the Microsoft Dynamics NAV partner KumaVision developed and implemented an interface between GCT’s Microsoft Dynamics Navision ERP system and the new Microsoft Project. GCT uses the interface to transfer actual hours worked from the project management system to the ERP system. The new version also includes enhancements to GCT’s Skills Management database, which the company uses to provide highly-specialized engineers – including both internal and freelance staff – to fill specific vacancies.

Currently, 15 project managers and about 350 project team members are using the upgraded Microsoft Project Server and SharePoint systems regularly. “We’ve only had positive feedback so far,” says Susanne Bohlin. “Everyone says they can work more efficiently and that it’s much easier to find project-related documents now.”
