City Gas action agenda reaches India and beyond

The Indian natural gas demand is expected to experience an unprecedented growth of 10% annually in the next five years, with nearly 200 cities receiving natural gas by 2015. This will allow it to reach over 300 standard million cubic metres of gas per day and making it one of the biggest consumers of natural gas here in Asia.

India, however, is not alone; China, Korea, Japan, as well as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are all looking at developing and upgrading their natural gas distribution networks to leverage on this cleaner and cheaper alternative to conventional fossil fuels like oil or coal.

Hence, it makes sense that conference organiser, IQPC, together with the Singapore Gas Association, joined forces to launch the new City Gas Asia 2011 Congress. Natural gas distribution stakeholders will gather on 30 & 31 March 2011 at the Prince Hotel and Residence, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to discuss the future of the Asian city gas industry.

“Natural gas will play an important part in most countries’ energy mix for a long time to come,” said GL Noble Denton’s Andy Cummings, who will be amongst the industry leaders speaking at the event; covering challenges and opportunities for the development of city gas networks.

Oman’s Goutam Sen of National Gas Company SAOG will also be there to make the case for “LPP: Converting liquid fuels to natural gas to meet future clean energy demands”. National Gas has been credited with bringing many innovations to the market that includes setting up the first large scale township gas network in Oman, and successfully installing the first synthetic natural gas system in the region.

On 21 January, during an informal networking luncheon sponsored by Energy IQ, the President of City Gas Pte Ltd, Ng Yong Hwee, met at the Grand Hyatt Hotel of Singapore with consultants and contractors to discuss challenges and opportunities for the development, operations and maintenance of city gas distribution networks.
