Laura Guoke’s Art Creates Identity at Agora Gallery
Press release from: Agora Gallery
(openPR) - Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature Lithuanian artist, Laura Guoke, in the Persistence of Form. The exhibition is scheduled to run from January 11, 2011 through February 1, 2011 (opening reception: Thursday, January 13, 2011).
The work of Lithuanian artist Laura Guoke is characterized by an exploration of the essence of identity. Through a fusion of silkscreen printing techniques and new media, she deconstructs both human form and human formations and, in doing so, challenges the concept of personal purity. Her use of line to both demarcate and defragment the body is central to her postmodernist investigation of the interrelationship between the individual self and the collective self. She uses color to unify the dualistic concepts of the self, while allowing the absence of color to bring the very concept of self into question. Her examination of the lack of distinction between spectator and creator is achieved through a compositional balance that places equal emphasis on the full and the vacant. The self is thereby defined as much by what is absent as it is by what is present.
Laura Guoke was born in Kaunas, Lithuania and studied fine arts at Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts and Siauliai University. Since 2006, her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across Europe.
Exhibition Dates: January 11, 2011 – February 1, 2011
Reception: Thursday, January 13, 2011, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Gallery Location: 530 West 25th St, New York City

About the Exhibition:
Self-reflection and a consideration of human nature plays a role in The Persistence of Form, as these artists seek the ineffable explanation of experience and understanding. Skilled techniques and carefully chosen colors combine to present us with new ways of understanding the reality of form, in our world and in art.
Featured Artists:
Ia Chkhaidze, Michael Croman, Oleg Georgiyevskiy, Laura Guoke, Darren Jordan, Ray Lawler, Mira Mitrova
