TPS Examines Impact of Environmental Design at Prison Development Conference

Press release from: TPS Consult
‘Environment vs. Regime: Which Has Most Impact on the Success of Rehabilitation'

TPS Consult’s Associate Director of Architecture, Andreas Alexiou, appeared yesterday as a keynote speaker at the Prison Planning, Design and Development Conference 2010, providing critical insight into the factors which impact on the success of prisoner rehabilitation.

The industry event, taking place from the 7th–9th December 2010 at Kingsway Hall Hotel, London, is aimed at giving Project Managers, Framework Managers, Associate Directors, Architects, Technical Directors, Specialist Consultants and Ministry of Justice Officials working within the custodial industry the knowledge to move the industry forward.

Alexiou spoke on the opening day as part of a session aimed at discussing how to ‘Design a Prison that Promotes Prisoner Rehabilitation.’

He explored the topic of ‘Environment vs. Regime - which has most impact on the success of rehabilitation’; providing industry leading insight into why environmental design has come to the forefront of innovative architecture. He also examined whether the physical environmental design of a prison facility can really challenge the current system of rehabilitation, exhibited by custodial officials to be the most effective methods.

Alexiou, whose discipline is architecture, is the Associate Director for the Law and Order sector of TPS. For 25 years he has been involved in the design of prison facilities both in the UK and abroad and has worked directly with the Ministry of Justice. He has also collaborated with private prison operators in England and Wales, leading to a well-informed appreciation of the challenges that face today’s prisons.

“The presentation reviewed prison design trends, not just in light of the government’s recent spending review, but also over the last 25 years, and seeks to highlight best practice,” explains Alexiou. “It focused on the regime opportunities available within prisons and on how the architect seeks to contribute by designing flexible accommodation that allows training, education and other needs to flourish, all within a physical environment where staff can manage and operate facilities in an efficient, constructive and safe manner.”
