What: Mayor Allan M. Dorman will be joined by local elected officials and war veterans in placing the wreath for the Islandia Veterans Memorial. During the ceremony, the U.S. Marine Corps Helicopter Squadron 361 Veterans Association, Inc., a non-profit group based in Cutchogue, will perform a flyby over the memorial in a Sikorsky UH-34D helicopter and will land in the village hall parking lot.

The UH-34D — also known as “Freedom’s Flying Memorial” — was used for combat rescue missions during the Vietnam War, served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and took part in the recovery of U.S. astronauts during Project Mercury. Veterans who flew in the helicopter during the Vietnam War will be aboard the UH-34D during the flyby.

“This machine took wounded soldiers out of harm’s way and provided supplies to our troops. I helped evacuate fellow Marines and Medevaced wounded soldiers to safety,” said Mayor Dorman, a former combat veteran with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mayor Dorman and some of the veterans who flew in the helicopter during the Vietnam War will be aboard the helicopter during the flyby, which will originate from MacArthur Airport. After the ceremony, visitors can get an up-close look at the vintage helicopter. U.S.O.-type entertainment will be provided by The Victory Belles, and a cold brunch will be served under the big tent. The Victory Belles and the brunch are sponsored by Cablevision and Computer Associates.

Directions: To Veterans Memorial Triangle: LIE to Exit 58 South (Old Nichols Road) to Central Islip. Go down Old Nichols Road for approximately 0.6 mile. Triangle is on the left.

Village Hall is located at 1100 Old Nichols Road, approximately half a mile up from the Veterans Memorial Triangle and across the street.
