Smartlogic publish white paper: how to structure data

Smartlogic publish white paper: how to structure data

Smartlogic recently delivered a seminar describing the ways in which semantic technology solves the problem of unstructured data and promises to introduce major improvements to the way in which end users find, use and interact with 'content' .
Smartlogic, experts in the field of information management strategy, are the developers of Semaphore, the open semantic platform which uses advanced content classification and ontology management to structure data and thus enhance enterprise search and navigation.
The paper, entitled '8 things to consider when using semantics in your information management strategy' is one of a number of presentations made to the AIIM '8 Factors to Consider in Creating an Information Management Strategy' seminar series.
AIIM are a leading non-profit community that focus on helping users to understand the challenges associated with managing documents, content, records and business processes. They provide education, research and best practices to help organisations find, control, and optimise their information.
During his address to the conference, Smartlogic's CEO, Jeremy Bentley, asserts that 'unless a business' IT budget is growing at the same rate as its enterprise information, an approach is needed to structure data, that is, to manage, surface and control the information that does not mandate adding more storage, staff or restrictions.'

He describes how information management strategy commonly relies on systems responsible for content that understand nothing about the subject or domain of the information under their management - so search engines, content management systems and process engines are all blind to meaning and context. He explains that 'in real life, the meaning of a piece of information determines its usefulness, relevance and treatment. Semantics add a layer of intelligence by describing what the content is about, using structured data - aka metadata.'

Metadata enables applications to understand the meaning of content, generates structured information about unstructured data and so enables applications to understand the meaning of content. This can then significantly improve enterprise information management strategy by being used to drive workflows, archiving policy, search, compliance, access control and discovery.

Smartlogic's Semaphore software achieves this quickly and efficiently by automatically capturing an organisation's topics, language and context into an ontology.
