Mesothelioma treatment Tomudex, made by a global pharmaceutical company, is receiving approval from a panel of international experts. Tomudex falls in the group of anti-cancer drugs known as antineoplastics. It prevents cell growth. By doing so, it leads to the elimination of tumors.

In a study examining people diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, the use of Tomudex in conjunction with Platinol resulted in improved response rates of 23.6% as opposed to 13.6% for those using Platinol alone. Secondly, 58% of those who received Tomudex and Platinol in their mesothelioma treatment program showed no new growth of mesothelioma tumor whereas 54% of those who received Platinol only showed no new growth. Finally, the median-survival rate of those who received Tomudex and Platinol was 11.4 months whereas the survival rate for those who received Platnol only was 8.8 months. Tomudex has not yet received FDA approval.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an asbestos cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs (the pleura). It is the most common form of mesothelioma. Other types of mesothelioma are peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma develops decades after exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos exposure occurs when airborne asbestos fibers are inhaled. Inhaled asbestos fibers become trapped in the lungs and eventually, lead to malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma symptoms associated with pleural mesothelioma are shortness of breath, chest pan, coughing of blood, fatigue and night sweats.

Mesothelioma treatment approaches aim to provide relief from symptoms of the cancer because there is no cure. Treatment techniques include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Mesothelioma disease claims the lives of about 3,000 people in the U.S. every year. People who worked with asbestos-containing products are at highest risk of developing mesothelioma. This includes mechanics, sheet metal workers, construction workers, electricians and plumbers.
