Building on quality - Hong Kong companies at the K 2010 in Dusseldorf

10-28-2010 08:18 AM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction

Press release from: Hong Kong Trade Development Council

Frankfurt am Main/ 26 October 2010/ The K 2010 – the international trade fair for plastics and rubber – will take place in Dusseldorf from 27 October to 3 November 2010. No other trade fair brings together exhibitors and trade visitors from this industry under one roof. The main product categories of K 2010 are raw materials and auxiliaries, technical parts and plastic products as well as machines and equipments for the plastic and rubber industry. 250 exhibitors from Mainland China and 44 from Hong Kong will be exhibiting during the 18th edition of K fair (2007: 155 from China and 31 from Hong Kong). Six companies from Hong Kong will present their products on the joint pavilion in Hall 1, stand A25 (2007:8) organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

Southeast Asia is one of the most important growth markets for the plastic industry. Buyers will be able to get information on quality products “Made in Hong Kong” at the joint pavilion. Hong Kong companies no longer put their main focus on a large number of items but rather in design and quality. This is not only due to the requirements of the export countries but also due to the increased demand for high-class products from Mainland China. The plastics production and processing as well as mould construction sectors in Hong Kong have been able to recover from the economic crisis. “The economy is recovering since 2009, but this progress could also become steadier”, said Alfred Au, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Mould and Die Council, in an interview in September. He pointed out that he had spoken to numerous companies which reported to have had many orders during particular months but followed by periods where they received fewer orders. Smaller companies in the mould construction sector had to close down or merge with each other after the crisis. The goal is to enlarge the companies or concentrate on niches, for example covering the complex requirements from the automotive industry.

The following companies exhibiting at the joint pavilion organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) during the K fair are: Hongrita Mold Ltd., Kin Tat Rubber Technology Ltd., and Ultratech Mold Design & Mfg.Co.Ltd.. AH Chau Plastic & Mould Manufactory Ltd., Ngai Hong Coltec Ltd. and TK Mold Ltd. exhibiting again in Dusseldorf as they also did in 2007.

Hongrita Mold Ltd. supplies its plastic moulds and injection parts to various industries including automotive, medical and electronics. The company provides `one-step-services´ to its customers starting from tool design, mold making, spraying and printing to quality control.

The molding company Ultratech Mold Design & Mfg. Co. Ltd. produces high precision injection molds, molding and sub-assembly. In order to ensure the high quality of its products supplied to the mobile phone sector, cosmetic and the packaging industry, Ultratech uses the two shot injection molding method to process various polymers. Major markets are the USA and Europe.

Ngai Hing Hong Coltec Ltd. has specialized in manufacturing and selling pigment and colored masterbatches. Based on the current discussion on global warming and the world wide energy crisis, NHH Coltec is aware that there is no ultimate solution to the problem. Especially plastic has a bad reputation in relation to environmental pollution. The company uses among others biodegradable polymer in order to help conserve resources.

Kin Tat Rubber Technology Ltd. supplies rubber components and assemblies to the electronic and car industry. TK Mold Ltd. is one of the leading injection molding manufacturers to exhibit in Dusseldorf. The tailor made small components are particularly used in mobile phones while the larger component parts are used in vehicles. A lot has changed at Ah Chau Plastic & Mould Manufactory Ltd. since the last K Fair in 2007. The manufacturing company of finished molded parts for the entertainment industry, toys and office supplies does not only meet the international production standards but now also the environmental norm ISO14000. In 2009 the company started following the standards set by the automotive industry in quality management according to the OST/TS 16949 norm.

A significant increase

Hong Kong’s plastic industry has been developing inconsistently for the past few years. In 2009 the exports of plastic raw material decreased by 15.9 % to USD 8.9 million. The imports from the industrial countries had also fallen (-21.5 %). Especially toys´ manufacturers in southern China and manufacturers of consumer electronics and household electronics, who require large quantities of plastic and who get their most important primary products from the Special Administrative Region, reduced their orders considerably. Since the beginning of this year, Hong Kong has been gaining from plastics, synthetic fibers and colorant manufacturers accumulating inventories in the southern Chinese province. Thus Hong Kong’s exports of plastic raw materials increased by 29.2 % to USD 7.3 million from January to August 2010. The imports increased by 36.5 % to (USD 8.3 million).

Purchasers of rubber and plastic products from Europe, the USA and Japan had to first use up their stocks in 2009. The plastic sector has been recovering since the Christmas sales. From January to August 2010 finished plastic products worth USD 9.2 million (+26.7 %) left Hong Kong.

A statutory body established in 1966, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is the international marketing arm for Hong Kong-based traders, manufacturers and service providers. With more than 40 global offices, including 11 on the Chinese mainland, the HKTDC promotes Hong Kong as a platform for doing business with China and throughout Asia. The HKTDC also organises trade fairs and business missions to connect companies with opportunities in Hong Kong and on the mainland, while providing information via trade publications, research reports and online.
