Mesothelioma Cancer: Possible Treatment Option
Press release from: Weitz & Luxenberg
(openPR) - An experiment carried out in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Medical University Vienna has tested the effectiveness of a genetically modified virus to treat mesothelioma in animals. The virus is known as Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV). Animals with mesothelioma administered with multiple doses of NDV responded better than those that received a single dose.
The use of a genetically engineered virus to disrupt the function of cancer cells is known as Oncolytic viral therapy. Malignant mesothelioma has no cure and therefore researchers are exploring all possible avenues of treatment. Mesothelioma treatment techniques focus on providing relief from symptoms of the cancer. Common approaches to treat mesothelioma are chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Mesothelioma treatment techniques are most effective when applied during the early stages of the cancer.
Malignant mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral that causes lung cancer and mesothelioma. The mineral has been used in many products including brakes, insulation material and shingles. Asbestos exposure occurs when an asbestos-containing product releases asbestos fibers that are subsequently inhaled. Inhaled asbestos fibers become trapped in organs such as the lungs and decades later, lead to the development of cancers such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.
