The new image processing devices combine digital imaging technology with optical sensor technology to record the sensor response of a planar sensor foil which covers the surface of a sample, e. g. animal or plant tissue, cell suspensions or sediments. The optical sensor foil translates the respective analyte content into a light signal which is recorded pixel by pixel using a digital camera. Heterogeneous samples can now easily be evaluated with respect to reliable addressing regions with high or low analyte content because one single image contains the information of an array of single point sensors. “With this method we will be able to visualize pH dynamics in the rhizosphere of plants two dimensionally.”, says Dirk Gansert, Göttingen Centre for Biodiversity & Ecology. “And as we can measure non-invasively, our sample can be analyzed without irritation or destruction even over a long period of time.”

A first prototype of the image processing devices will be shown at this year’s BIOTECHNICA in Hanover early October (Hall 9, Booth G53). The PreSens Imaging Solutions consists of a small sized camera handpiece, a 4 x 4 cm2 flexible sensor foil – which can be shaped to any desired geometry just using a scissor – and a customized software
