Asbestos Cancer Mesothelioma Afflicts a 39 Year Old Woman
Press release from: Weitz & Luxenberg
(openPR) - It has been reported that a 39 year old woman has been diagnosed with the cancer mesothelioma. This is somewhat unusual because mesothelioma most frequently afflicts people who are much older. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to the deadly mineral, asbestos. Asbestos exposure is known to cause various types of malignant mesothelioma. These include lung mesothelioma (or pleural mesothelioma) and abdominal mesothelioma (or peritoneal mesothelioma). Mesothelioma causing asbestos was used in many everyday products such as brake pads and floor tiles because of its physical properties- resistance to heat, flexibility and durability. People at highest risk of developing the cancer are those who worked with asbestos products.
However, mesothelioma can also be caused by secondary asbestos exposure. A person is secondarily exposed to asbestos when the exposure is from another person who came into contact with asbestos directly. In the case of the 39 year old woman, she was exposed to asbestos as a child from contact with her father's asbestos-contaminated work clothes. Her father was an electrician who regularly worked with asbestos-containing products such as insulation and would often return home with asbestos dust on his clothes. Mesothelioma symptoms appear decades after asbestos exposure and thus, the 39 year old woman was diagnosed with mesothelioma from asbestos exposure that had occurred during childhood.
Asbestos exposure and cancers like mesothelioma could have been avoided. There is evidence to show that companies in the asbestos industry knew of the lethal dangers of asbestos as far back as the 1930s. If these companies had warned of the dangers of asbestos or provided protective equipment such as respirators to prevent asbestos exposure, mesothelioma cancer would have been avoided. Companies however, chose to pursue neither of those two courses of action because asbestos is inexpensive and has vast commercial potential. The law recognizes the injustice perpetrated by the asbestos industry and allows eligible mesothelioma patients to recover financial compensation form companies responsible for their exposure to asbestos. A skilled mesothelioma attorney can help you navigate the legal system successfully to obtain substantial financial compensation.
