Illinois Schools Shut Down After Discovery of Asbestos
Press release from: Weitz & Luxenberg
(openPR) - It has been reported on www.claimsjournal.com that two schools in Heyworth, Illinois have been closed after an air sample tested positive for asbestos. As a result, school officials decided to cancel classes starting on September 23. The asbestos test was prompted by the discovery of a piece of plaster that custodians feared was asbestos. An asbestos clean-up project is planned followed by additional testing for asbestos.
Asbestos is a mineral that causes lung cancer and mesothelioma. These cancers develop 30 to 50 years after asbestos exposure has occurred. Asbestos exposure takes place through the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos fibers are invisible to the human eye and remain in the air for long periods of time. As such, they can be inhaled by people nearby. People at highest risk of asbestos exposure are those who worked with asbestos such as mechanics, boilermakers, electricians and construction workers.
Asbestos cancers could have been avoided. Companies in the asbestos industry knew about the lethal dangers of asbestos as far back as the 1930s but concealed them because asbestos is inexpensive and has many commercial uses. The desire for profit led companies to continue using asbestos while hiding its dangers and failing to provide workers with equipment to prevent asbestos exposure. For this reason, the law allows people who have been diagnosed with an asbestos cancer to file legal claims for financial compensation.
