Henriette Tibbs Explores the Depths of Color in Degrees of Abstraction at Agora Gallery

Press release from: Agora Gallery

(openPR) - Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature South African artist, Henriette Tibbs, in Degrees of Abstraction. The exhibition is scheduled to run from October 05, 2010 through October 26, 2010 (opening reception: Thursday, October 07, 2010).

Henriette Tibbs creates works of art that evoke her unending affection for color and its infinite variations. Tibbs, originally a South African native, attributes her bold and vivid palette to her culturally diverse heritage, and exposure to many different cultures through traveling in Europe and Asia, and living in Canada and, currently, the United States. Her large-scale paintings are characterized by saturated tones, depth, clearly defined shapes, and her seemingly dramatic use of shadows and contrast.

Tibbs knows no bounds with respect to subject matter, borrowing prevailing motifs and depicting various objects and structures found in her immediate surroundings. She often juxtaposes a traditional approach with abstract techniques she absorbed from working and studying with her contemporaries, including Peter Le Fevre, John Luna, Xane St. Philip, and Sara Mcintosh-Robichaud. Her technique relies heavily on thinly applied layers of oil, acrylic, or resin. In doing so, she meticulously builds up rich tones and colors onto her traditional canvas supports. She also uses tactile techniques such as scumbling, scraping, gestural dripping and mark making, adding a literal “personal touch” to her work.

Exhibition Dates: October 05, 2010 – October 26, 2010
Reception: Thursday, October 07, 2010, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Gallery Location: 530 West 25th St, New York City
