Up to the mountain – HAFAS for the iPhone crests Switzerland

Hanover 2010-08-05). The journey planner for the iPhone developed by the German software specialist HaCon has just won over the heart of Europe – the region of Zurich. HAFAS Mobile for the iPhone provides travellers of the Zurich transport association (ZVV) with all the relevant timetables for long- and short-distance connections. These comprise individual timetable information, departure boards and area maps as well as information about the nearest stations. Travellers get all the most up-to-date travel information directly on their iPhones: not only regional timetable information for the region of Zurich, but also the entire timetables of Switzerland.

HAFAS Mobile for the iPhone shows stations nearby based on the current position of the traveller. Passengers do not need to know where they are to find their way home. GPS is used to find out about the current position. They can search for stations or addresses and use extended search parameters for transportation mode, journey preferences and return journeys. Route alternatives, including door-to-door navigation and walking distances are displayed in a compact way. The remaining time to a desired departure is displayed as well as indications whether a connection can be reached in time. Floor plans and area maps based on Google Maps are embedded within the application. A favourite function for destinations and routes including auto-history for past queries are part of the application as well.

Altogether 51 transportation companies are part of the ZVV. Last year, about 567 million passengers made use of its services. With over 2,500 stops and 379 lines, the area being served stretches from Zimmerberg to Andelfingen. Inside of the ZVV approximately 10,000 employees make sure that passengers reach their destinations.

HAFAS Mobile for the iPhone has been put into operation in many countries. In May this year, HAFAS Mobile as an application for the iPhone reached a seven-digit number of downloads. Passengers have downloaded HaCon’s mobile journey planner for the popular Smartphone more than a million times. Currently HaCon is working on an enhanced HAFAS-application for AndroidTM as well as a new HAFAS Mobile version especially for Apple`s tablet computer iPad.
