Chinese Cinema Market to grow 60% in 2010
Press release from: Dataxis
(openPR) - In six years, China’s Cinema revenues increased sixfold as revenues surged from less than 1 billion Yuan (US$ 148 million) in 2003 to more than 6.2 billion Yuan (US$ 915 million) last year. Box office growth should continue in 2010, as revenues are expected to cross the 10 billion Yuan (US$ 1.47 billion) milestone in 2010.
This surge in box office reciepts has partly been driven by a significant increase in the average ticket price, which went from a bit more than 1$ in 2003 to 3.5$ last year.
In addition, this flourishing market, the third largest in the world in terms of movie admissions, has also been fueled by a significant increase in cinema attendance, as the number of movie goers soared 150% from 2003 to 2009.

To understand the rationale for this significant surge in movie admissions, it is interesting to note that the recent dynamic in movie production has been closely linked to the phenomena. Today, with around 500 movie productions expected for 2010, China is the third largest movie producer in the world after India and the U.S. On the other hand, Cinema going has started to deeply take root in Chinese habits; a trend that is encouraged by the current emergence of a strong middle class in the country.
