Scottish And Southern Energy Turns To Nlyte Software To Transform The Efficiency And Reliability Of Its Data Centre Operations

July 5th, 2010 – London, UK – nlyte Software today announced that Scottish and Southern Energy has used its data centre performance management (DCPM) suite to help it replace its existing data centres, which had run out of space and reached their end of life, and migrate over to two brand new, purpose built facilities in Hampshire. nlyte’s software has supported Scottish and Southern Energy to move all of its existing operations into these new low risk facilities, which will help it to deliver best practice services in a highly regulated industry and to maximise efficiency and reliability with minimum environmental impact.

When looking to move to the new facilities, Scottish and Southern Energy quickly decided that it needed to review the way in which it managed all of its data centre assets. Previously, the organisation had relied on individually-owned spreadsheets and Visio reports to manage its resources – however, to ensure the delivery of sophisticated best practices; increase efficiency, reliability and sustainability; and to meet its own strict goals, Scottish and Southern Energy required a solution that would provide real-time insight across all data centres.

“When assessing requirements for the project and what would be required to run both the migration and the new data centres in the most efficient, secure and safe way, we identified three main priorities,” said Simon Davis, Scottish and Southern Energy’s data centre manager. “These were to understand and gain better control of the data centre environment, to introduce centralised planning and change management, and to be able to immediately identify any potential risks to the operational environment. Furthermore, by providing a centralised repository with a single version of the ‘truth’ across all data centres, the organisation now has full control over its operations, ensuring that all critical assets are appropriately managed and eliminating all risk associated with system and process failures and energy supply threats.

For instance, with a single point of knowledge – from hardware and software to power and cooling – Davis and his team can properly plan and provision for new resources. And, in some cases, by being able to accurately see and map real-time power usage with the DCPM suite (rather than going by manufacturer’s plate values), Scottish and Southern Energy has been able to plan for up to 50 percent less power usage than previously thought.
