Scottish And Southern Energy Turns To Nlyte Software To Transform The Efficiency And Reliability Of Its Data Centre Operations

07-08-2010 04:17 PM CET | IT, New Media & Software

Press release from: nlyte Software

July 5th, 2010 – London, UK – nlyte Software today announced that Scottish and Southern Energy has used its data centre performance management (DCPM) suite to help it replace its existing data centres, which had run out of space and reached their end of life, and migrate over to two brand new, purpose built facilities in Hampshire. nlyte’s software has supported Scottish and Southern Energy to move all of its existing operations into these new low risk facilities, which will help it to deliver best practice services in a highly regulated industry and to maximise efficiency and reliability with minimum environmental impact.

When looking to move to the new facilities, Scottish and Southern Energy quickly decided that it needed to review the way in which it managed all of its data centre assets. Previously, the organisation had relied on individually-owned spreadsheets and Visio reports to manage its resources – however, to ensure the delivery of sophisticated best practices; increase efficiency, reliability and sustainability; and to meet its own strict goals, Scottish and Southern Energy required a solution that would provide real-time insight across all data centres.

“When assessing requirements for the project and what would be required to run both the migration and the new data centres in the most efficient, secure and safe way, we identified three main priorities,” said Simon Davis, Scottish and Southern Energy’s data centre manager. “These were to understand and gain better control of the data centre environment, to introduce centralised planning and change management, and to be able to immediately identify any potential risks to the operational environment. When evaluating competitive tools, it was clear that nlyte’s software would be the right solution to help us do this, by giving us a real-time dashboard view of all of our assets and connectivity across the new data centres.”

nlyte Software provided a smooth transition for Scottish and Southern Energy to its new data centres – not only by helping it manage the migration to the new facilities by ensuring the data centre activity element of the project was delivered on time. Furthermore, by providing a centralised repository with a single version of the ‘truth’ across all data centres, the organisation now has full control over its operations, ensuring that all critical assets are appropriately managed and eliminating all risk associated with system and process failures and energy supply threats.

“Every data centre manager should have a data centre management tool,” continued Davis. “They should be in total control of their data centre environment, should know everything there is to know about what’s going on in their data centres and understand the impact of any action or change within that data centre. nlyte has enabled us to create a standard framework for running and managing our data centres and has given us the ability to introduce robust, best practice management processes that have transformed the way we work.”

Since deploying nlyte’s DCPM suite, Scottish and Southern Energy has already experienced massive benefits. For instance, with a single point of knowledge – from hardware and software to power and cooling – Davis and his team can properly plan and provision for new resources. And, in some cases, by being able to accurately see and map real-time power usage with the DCPM suite (rather than going by manufacturer’s plate values), Scottish and Southern Energy has been able to plan for up to 50 percent less power usage than previously thought.

“Organisations are falling under more pressure than ever before – from budget cuts to increased regulation,” said Jon Temple, CEO of nlyte Software. “This, coupled with Scottish and Southern Energy’s own standards to deliver the highest level services possible in the most reliable and sustainable way, meant that it needed a completely new approach to the way it managed its data centres. We’re delighted that our technology has been chosen to lie at the heart of this new environment and it has been a pleasure to work with such a progressive organisation that shares the same core values as we do.”

Scottish and Southern Energy also plans to work with nlyte to increase the use of its reporting capabilities, extending this to Scottish and Southern Energy’s wider IT support groups to provide them with better access to valuable information. By extending these capabilities, these IT groups will be able to capture and manage asset and connectivity information from Scottish and Southern Energy’s other numerous remote sites.
