Cooperation with OSBF & OSR Group: WeWebU Expands Open Source Network

IT, New Media & Software
Press release from: WeWebU Software AG
(openPR) - Herzogenaurach, 05/05/2010 – Starting in July as one of the first companies worldwide, WeWebU Software AG will provide user-friendly Web applications for Enterprise Content Management (ECM) based on the new CMIS standard (Content Management Interoperability Services) as Open Source. That is why WeWebU, maker of standard software for Enterprise Information Management (EIM), now works together with the Open Source Research (OSR) Group at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and has become a member of Open Source Business Foundation (OSBF).

„Open Source Business Foundation is a European-wide network consisting of companies, institutions and persons with one joint interest: supporting the understanding and usage of Open Source development and business models. On the one hand, this network provides know-how, on the other hand it offers the possibility to share experiences“, describes CEO Richard Seibt the OSBF, „I am happy to welcome WeWebU as a new member of the OSBF. Their support of open standards like CMIS fits perfectly to an Open Source strategy. I am sure by going open source their innovative products will find the market reach they deserve.”

Furthermore, on its way to an Open Source vendor WeWebU works together with Prof. Dr. Dirk Riehle, leader of the OSR Group at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Thus, they quickly can integrate newest trends and research results into their development process. Prof. Dr. Riehle knows the advantages of an Open Source strategy: „We see that Open Source marketing and development models are ahead of traditional closed source approaches. Open Source allows software product companies to go to market faster with a better product and at lower costs.” With this method, WeWebU wants to be up-to-date and close to the users’ requirements as well.

WeWebU OpenWorkdesk, a suite of applications for Enterprise Content Management (ECM) with an intuitive Web 2.0 front-end, will be available in three different editions from July 2010: First, as a free-of-charge Community Edition that can be run on all CMIS-supporting ECM platforms such as Alfresco. This version will provide all essential functions for efficient eFile management and retrieval. Under a subscription model, WeWebU will offer a commercial Pro Edition of OpenWorkdesk with full support and maintenance as well as a slightly extended functional range. Finally, the Enterprise Edition will provide further functions that are important for huge deployments, such as a module for business process management and numerous additional native adapters for IBM ECM repositories as well as the JCR standard.

„Since our announcement five weeks ago, we have made considerable progress on our way towards an Open Source version of OpenWorkdesk. Comprehensive tests of our CMIS adapter against the Open Source platform Alfresco were as promising as the tests with the new CMIS interface of an IBM FileNet system. The consistently positive reactions, which our announcement has caused among our customers and partners as well as in the professional world, show us that we have taken the right step. They encourage us to continue the path of going Open Source with full energy”, states Dr. Rainer Pausch, Head of Products & Marketing at WeWebU Software AG.

About OSBF
The Open Source Business Foundation (OSBF) founded in Nuremberg in May 2006 is a European-wide open source network. The members of OSBF are companies, institutions and persons inspired by open source software. The activities of the network always focus on the business benefits of open source software. The Articles of Association of OSBF accordingly define the purpose of the association as strengthening the open source software and service industry and creating and safeguarding jobs in the development and service sectors. OSBF also has political tasks and goals. The importance of open source software is to be improved by actively coordinating opinion-making among OSBF members and by lobbying third parties such as associations and politics. Typical fields of activity are improving the political framework for the use of open source software, legal aspects of patents and licenses, local authority contract awarding guidelines or promoting the use of open source software in small and medium enterprises. OSBF is to intensify dialog with ministries and political parties in Berlin and Brussels for this purpose. Read more on www.osbf.de/en.
