Press release from: Rapid-I

Dr. Ingo Mierswa
(openPR) - Germany, Dortmund, 30.04.2010 -- Dr. Ingo Mierswa, a computer scientist from Dortmund, was put forward by the Dortmund University of Technology for the 2009 dissertation award. With this award, the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (German Informatics Society), Swiss Informatics Society (SI), the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) and the German Chapter of the ACM (GChACM) honour outstanding work in computer science. The prize of 5000 euro is awarded once a year for the best computer science dissertation written at a university in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. In his dissertation, Dr. Ingo Mierswa lays the theoretical foundations for avoiding the frequent problem of overfitting in data mining. Using multi-objective and non-convex optimisation methods, he successfully generated models with high accuracy from sets of data points. Such data mining models not only provide insight into the most probable future, but can also be used to discover opportunities and risks in business environments. This allows for example the identification of customers who are about to churn or the prediction of production or quality problems in advance. Furthermore, data mining can even describe the reasons for those events.

After having completed his dissertation under Professor Dr. Katharina Morik, Dr. Ingo Mierswa founded the company Rapid-I and acts as its CEO today. The main product of Rapid-I is the software RapidMiner, developed to a considerable extent by Dr. Ingo Mierswa, which has already become the most-used open source solution for data analyses in the world today.
