There are many stories about water intrusion into subterranean areas with most being horror stories. Many technologies are available with almost all being temporary solutions. Groundwater intrusion into a building can cause serious structural degradation, corrosion of mechanical equipment, increased maintenance requirements, and can make areas uninhabitable or even unusable.
Humid environments are known to promote growth of molds and bacteria that have an adverse effect on human health and worker productivity.
As the molds and microorganisms proliferate, indoor air quality decreases and health problems increase.
To improve air quality it is necessary to decrease relative humidity and lower the moisture level of the surfaces on which the molds and microorganisms grow. Water Intrusion Technologies have a permanent solution for removing and keeping water out, which is Electro-Osmotic Pulse (EOP) Water Removal.
Traditional methods for correcting water intrusion involved the application of sealants or costly excavation around a facility exterior.
In 1994, a team of researchers and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) began development of an innovative technology for the prevention of water intrusion in below-grade concrete structures.
This technology has been successfully used in basements, elevator shafts, tunnels, underground bunkers, crawl spaces and recently a city street.
The heart of this technology is strategically placing an Anode (titanium strip) on the expected dry side and Cathode (copper rods) on the wet side and passing a controlled current from the Anode to the Cathode.
Water attaches to the electrically charged ions as they move from the Anode to the Cathode and therefore the water is removed from the controlled media.
One of the many challenges was keeping the rebar, which is embedded in the concrete for strength, from corroding.
A high tech controller, patent pending, was designed to provide controlled current flow through the concrete, protect the rebar and manage multi-zone applications. EOP was tested and validated with the Facilities Engineering Applications Program (FEAP) which was administered by the Corps of Engineers Center for Public Works (CECPW-EB).
EOP system installations saved more than 40% over the installation cost of a conventional 'trench and drain' method.
Unlike other methods, EOP is a permanent solution and does not have to be redone every few years. EOP technology was one of four finalists for the prestigious Civil Engineering Research Foundation’s (CERF) Charles Pankow award for technology innovation in 1999.
