Japan: video market falls 5%, while Cinema grows 4%

(openPR) - In this very turbulent market conditions, Japanese video market held up relatively well in 2009 as video sales fell 1% in volume and 5% in value according to Dataxis Intelligence’s Entertainment market research service.

In 2009, video sales (incl. retail, rental and business use) totaled 88.270 million units, up from 87.346 million in 2008. It is interesting to note that the decrease in DVD sales (50.418 million units sold in 2009 vs 55.368 million in 2008) was offset by a 135% rise in Blu-ray sales. In 2009, the Japanese bought 5.414 million Blu-ray discs, up from 2.296 million 2008.

In terms of value, overall Japanese video market generated 275.040 bn Yen ($3.05 bn) in 2009, down from 288,209 bn Yen ($3.21 bn) in 2008. The share of Blu-ray in video revenues increased from 3.4% to 8.8% in 2009.

On the other hand, Japanese movie theaters attracted 169.297 million movie goers in 2009, up from 160.491 million in 2008. Box-Office Receipts increased 4% from 198.443 bn Yen ($2.21 bn) in 2008 to 206.035 Yen ($2.29 bn) in 2009.
